History:
[Content warnings: discussion of sexual abuse and incest involving minors, and some victim blaming]

Nanami and her older brother, Touga, were adopted at a young age by the rich Kiryuu family, young enough that Nanami doesn't recall that her parents are not her biological parents. Their history before they arrive at Ohtori Academy (a boarding school) is shown only as a few flashbacks. It's not mentioned on screen in the TV series, but the director confirms that backstory from the movie applies to the TV series, in that Touga was seuxally abused by his adoptive father, a fact he deliberately kept from Nanami so she could have a more normal childhood. What is shown is that Nanami's parents were distant from her, and her major influence as a child was her older brother.

Both Touga and Nanami attend a boarding school, Ohtori Academy. They live together, and Touga is involved in the Ohtori Student Council, giving him a great deal of power in the setting. Nanami is popular among her peers, but she's also a bully, especially to girls who show an interest in her older brother (or who interest him). When she notices that her brother is talking about Anthy Himemiya, she deliberately targets Himemiya for bullying, which is only stopped when her antics lead to Anthy and her roommate, Utena Tenjou, swapping bodies, and Touga ordering her to go to India to get the curry powder responsible for the swap so they can reverse it.

Did I mention Ohtori Academy is a bit weird? Good, because it's not a bit weird, it is incredibly weird.

Nanami gained the services of an elementary schooler, Mitsuru Tsuwabuki, after he rescued her from a number of calamities (ones he was causing to get her attention). Nanami transfered her dislike to Utena Tenjou after Touga was injured protecting Utena from his best friend, Kuchiki Saionji (who was expelled for assaulting another student with a sword). Touga offered her a way to revenge herself: become a Duelist like he, Saionji, and Utena were, and offered her a Duelist's Ring.

The Student Council and Utena Tenjou were involved in a strange dueling game that involved cutting off a rose pinned to an opponent's breast pocket, in order to win the Rose Bride (Anthy Himemiya) as their fiance and, ultimately bring the revolution to the world, as predicted by the mysterious End of the World (who communicated with the Student Council via letter). Nanami chose to duel Utena, the current Engaged, entirely to make Utena suffer for her role in hurting Touga. Nanami even broke the rules, attacking Utena with a sword and dagger after Utena had cut the rose from Nanmi's breast. None the less, she still lost, and Touga told her that she didn't have to fight any more. He was the next to challenge Utena; he won, but she challenged him to a rematch and won, sending Touga into a depression.

Nanami spent the next arc worried about her brother and acting as interim Student Council President. Most of the arc ended up being erased from history, except for the time Nanami mistook a cowbell for designer jewelry and turned into a cow.

Touga gained his confidence back, letting Nanami retire to a normal Student Council member and stick to worrying about serious things like growing up, the expectations of her social class, and laying eggs. Things might have stayed as they were, but one of Nanami's friends' innocent questions about blood types made her assume Touga was adopted and she was an idiot for not realizing it. Nanami started avoiding him by sleeping in her friends' dorm rooms, when the Acting Chairman of the school, Akio Ohotori (Anthy HImemeya's brother), invited her to stay with Utena, Anthy, and him, as a way of circumventing the rules that should returned her to her assigned lodgings with her brother.

Nanami had cooled her need for revenge on Utena and Anthy but didn't get along with them. She worried that the fact she wasn't Touga's sister meant she was just like Touga's assorted girlfriends and one-night stands. Touga, once he discovered what Nanami's problem was, then lied to her by confirming her belief they weren't biolgoically related. Nanami's friends told her they didn't have to listen to her if she wasn't Touga's sister. Adding to that, Nanami, looking for the bathroom, discovered Akio was sexually abusing his sister, Anthy.

After Nanami attempts to get out of her terrible situation by transfering to Ohtori's sister school, Touga and Akio took her out for a drive to pursaude her to challenge Utena to a duel again. Touga also hinted that because they weren't biologically related, they could be boyfriend and girlfriend. Nanami reacts with disgust, because she still thought of Touga as her brother. Never the less, Nanami did challenge Utena because she wanted to prove she was able to beat Utena when Touga couldn't, and to show she wasn't like Anthy (who submitted to Akio's abuse). Because of the tension between Nanami and Touga, however, she wasn't able to overcome the close bond between Utena and Anthy, and lost a second time to Utena.

Nanami's final duel marked her decision to get the hell out of the Student Council. She stopped wearing her ring and special uniform, and she did try to warn Utena about what was going on, but her own disgust meant she wasn't able to communicate anything other than that she neither liked nor trusted Akio and Anthy, and Utena should get the hell out too.

Personality:
The basic thing to understand about Nanami is that she seems arrogant, but that masks a basic insecurity. Nanami had no problems bossing around Tsuwabuki and her three 'friends' (Aiko, Keiko and Yuuko), because she knows Tsuwabuki has a crush on her and her friends hope that being on good terms with Nanami will let them attract Touga. But Nanami is afraid that any minor slight will knock her from everyone's good graces. When she finds an egg in her bed, she's afraid to ask anyone for help because she doesn't want to appear to be an egg-laying freak, or to reveal she's ignorant of basic human bodily functions. She also assumes others are like her -- she tries to plant weird animals in Anthy's things so Utena and Student Council member Miki will think Anthy is too strange to be friends with. It turns out Anthy's actual pets are stranger, and Utena and Miki don't care (Miki even finds it endearing).

Nanami is a bully, and can be both emotionally manipulative and occasionally physically abusive (though only to weaker people: Keiko, Aiko and Yuuko, and Anthy). A lot of this is based on her insecurity. As long as she can make someone else the scapegoat, she is above them in the pecking order. She will even use deception to lure people in -- for instance, at first she defended Anthy to get her to come to a party solely so she could humiliate her in public. When not needing to be so for a scheme, she can be pretty blunt.

One of Nanami's (former) investments in her image was that her brother was special, and Nanami was special because she was his sister. Nanami was very jealous of things that took up her brother's attention, especially women. As a child, Nanami deliberately got rid of a kitten that she herself gave her brother, feeling upset that he spent more time playing with the kitten than her. In a timeline that was erased, she devoted all her social capital to getting Keiko ostracized when Keiko expressed excessive interest in Touga. And, of course, she deliberately targeted both Anthy and Utena early on when she thought Touga cared too much about them. This can also manifest in envy and one-upmanship, where Nanami models a designer cowbell to show she was just as fashionable as an upperclassman, not realizing that the English word 'cowbell' was a bell for a cow.

Nanami is also self-centered and careless with others. Half the time she takes shameless advantage of Tsuwabuki's devotion to her because it's nice to have someone handling her schedule and making her lunches and being her go-fer. On the other hand, when not beset by jealousy or directing her insecurity outward, she does seem to have a good heart. When she thinks she laid an egg and Touga (assuming she is being metaphorical) hints that girls who lay eggs are not the sort of girl he wants to associate with, Nanami finds she's unable to abandon a helpless child to protect her own image. She occasionally does remember Tsuwabuki is a child, and should be hanging around with his peers, rather than being her servant. She even attempts persistently to warn Utena about Akio and Anthy, though her discomfort at speaking about incest means she is less blunt than she usually is. She also refuses Miki offering to stay at Akio's so she could stay in his dorm room, out of a desire to protect Miki.

Nanami also has a surprising bedrock to her personality, revealed mainly when Touga causes her to question her worth. She decides she can't be Touga's beloved younger sister with him telling people he's adopted, but that she still sees him as a brother, not a boyfriend. She is able to pull herself together for her final duel, which has the surprising difference in, unlike her first duel, she does it for her, not in the name of her brother. She also gains the awareness that Akio and Touga are manipulating the duelists for some purpose and leaves the Student Council, the only member of the Student Council able to put aside the leverage Akio and Touga have on her. Even when she's lost everything she had identified as made her special and valuable, she is able to protect herself and pick up the pieces.

Third-Person Sample:

Nanami sat in the room she'd been given, holding the crystal she had. It was red, as red as her brother's hair, or the Rose Bride's dress. Nanami had never been homesick before -- home had always been where her brother was -- but she suspected this was what it felt like.

Or maybe it was that she was surrounded by animate teddy bears who seemed to think she was a Hero of Light. And it wasn't like Nanami had a choice in the matter, because they couldn't tell her where the Academy was.

"Heroes are stupid," she had explained to Hari, who was supposed to be 'her' Moogle or whatever. Her brother -- she had to start calling him Touga, or Kiryuu-san -- had been her hero, until he told her that he had been just keeping up appearances. Other than that, she thought of Tenjou-san, who was a tomboy and so clueless that Nanami wondered how she'd made it almost to high school. Tenjou-san didn't even know what she was saving people from or for.

"But we need someone," he explained. "The Queen is missing and monsters are everywhere."

Nanami had gotten sick of arguing with him, so asked for a room and told him to leave him alone. She had taken off the armor that had replaced her school uniform -- she better get that back, since she lost the Student Council's ability to wear what they want -- and closed her eyes.

She was going to find a way out of this world. Or at least what was going on.

At least this meant she didn't have to deal with her brother, and whatever he and the Chairman and Himemiya were up with. That was... actually, that wasn't that bad. Here no one cared who Kiryuu Touga was, so Nanami was... well, still no one, but no one knew she used to be someone. And maybe she could become someone here. Someone different. Not a Hero, maybe, but she might as well use the swordsmanship lessons -- ones taken to be closer to her brother and his hobbies -- for something. She could prove that Kiryuu Nanami was still a force to be reckoned with, on her own.

Mognet Sample:

Look, do any of you know what's going on? I mean, you don't really believe all this stuff the Moogles tell you. (Mine is giving me such a look right now.)

But, I mean, I'm a middle school student. I'm not some kind of Hero of Light. And I have enough trouble at home. With classes and things, I mean. I'm getting tutored in math, for pity's sake.

Just because they gave me a sword and some armor doesn't mean I'm a prince on a white horse. Do you know what I mean?

Content Warning
First off, this includes spoilers for Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV series).

Second, elements of Nanami's backstory include bullying (both emotional and physical), animal abuse, and a whole lot of not-okay sexual matters. (Incest and sexual abuse of minors, up to and including rape.) The former is likely to come up more (see Permissions), but the latter two are something that even a girl as blunt as Nanami can't really talk about. Still, if any of these are things you don't want to play with, let me know. I will warn if the conversation goes that direction.

Permissions

Nanami is a bully. She's not quite sure how to navigate a world without physical intimidation (usually to other girls, probably not to adults) or various emotional manipulation tactics (to everyone, but she's more likely to use them on other teenagers than adults* or children). If you would like to play with Nanami, but don't want her to attack your character, let me know. (She is capable of interacting with peers in a seemingly genuine fashion.)

* Rather, Nanami assumes adults have power over her, so her manipulation is less likely to be bullying and more likely to shore up her own reputation and shield herself.
